The waltz is danced in three- four time, as i've mentioned this on the info page about Waltz, each measure of music has three beats, these beats are counted: one- two- three, one- two- three with the accent always on the one. This creates an invisible box made with the feet which is why this step pattern was named simply the waltz "box". Now that we know how waltz is counted we can easily get out feet to action and start practice. Even if its a simple dance we should take it slowly to begin, and keep in mind or we can even say loud the beats: one- two- three and so on, saying it loud can help you understand the timing of your steps.
Waltz box has two parts: man's foot work and lady's footwork. As in the all ballroom dances the man leads the dance and will start with his left foot forward and the lady will start with her right foot backward. Man starts with his left foot forward, from this he will step to the right, step back, and to the left back to the original starting place, simple as one- two- three, left- side- together- right- side- together and so forth. Lady's footwork is right- side- together- left- side - together, she starts with her right foot back, then moving to the left, then forward, then to the right to reach her original starting place. One thing to remember: man should make sure he counts along as he is stepping and the lady should count to make sure she is in time.
